The Italian artist Calisto Gritti (born in Bergamo in 1937) is being featured at the second annual exhibition organised by the Associazione Amici dell'Atelier Calcografico in the Porticato of the Salita dei Frati Library. The exhibition includes around 20 engravings made between 2005 and 2019 using various techniques including aquatint, drypoint, burin, mezzotint and carborundum. The public is offered an opportunity to gain an insight into Gritti’s engraved oeuvre. The artist is also a painter and sculptor.
Calisto Gritti is concerned with the possibilities of the exploration and renewal of traditional artistic expression. The works on display, which spring from plates prepared and worked without the aid of a preparatory drawing, are characterised by a chromatic and graphic richness of expression and freshness of execution.
Fundamental for Gritti remains the moment when he feels that his work has developed a life of its own and can convey "a feeling, a thought or a situation". Over the years, Gritti has pursued his research with rigour, sincerity and creative freedom, in a “dialogue with emotions”, as Raffaele Sicignano, his former pupil, has pointed out.
