The venue of the Buchmann Gallery Lugano is a place of art, communication, meeting and exchange with collectors and connoisseurs. With the exhibition dedicated to Alberto Garutti, which closed at the end of March 2025, Elena Buchmann concludes the exhibition activity of her gallery by reviewing these 50 years.

Founded in St. Gallen in 1975 and based in Basel from 1983 to 1996, the gallery moved to Agra/Lugano in 1998 to a building specially constructed to house large-scale works and a sculpture garden. Since 2013, the gallery has managed an exhibition space in Lugano and since 2020 all gallery activities have been concentrated exclusively there. Together with her husband Felix Buchmann, the Buchmann Galerie has dedicated itself to international contemporary art and has organized important exhibitions with artists such as Mario Merz, Dieter Roth, Emilio Vedova, Tony Cragg and Wolfgang Laib, thus providing important inspiration for the contemporary art scene.

A series of exhibitions on Transavanguardia painting, Figuration Libre and the Junge Wilde, as well as trends in British sculpture are worth mentioning. The exhibition of a walk-in room completely covered in beeswax by Wolfgang Laib, the opening show with Mario Merz in Basel after a working stay of several months, organised by the gallery at Rietberg Castle in Domleschg/GR, or motivating Tony Cragg to work with glass by creating new sculptures, a material that has become increasingly topical in the art scene today.

In recent years, Elena Buchmann has increasingly devoted herself to mediating and presenting artists such as Lawrence Carroll, Véronique Arnold, Livio Bernasconi, Alex Dorici, Felice Varini and Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger.

Today Elena Buchmann continues to dedicate herself to the artists with whom she has maintained a close relationship for many years as part of the Buchmann Office, a place where she will advise collectors and institutions and devote herself to expanding the gallery's archive.
