Discover a museum that tells the story of the living beings which inhabited the sea ant the coast of what is now southern Ticino.
The 2.5-meter long reconstruction of the saurian Ticinosuchus welcomes visitors to the fossil museum in the centre of the village of Meride. Spread over four floors, the large variety of animals that lived 245 to 180 million years ago in the erstwhile sea and on the coast of southern Ticino are exhibited. Illustrations and models explain to the public the long extinct world whose fossils have been excavated, prepared and scientifically described by Swiss and Italian experts since 1850.
Remodeled and expanded by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta, the Fossil Museum in Meride exhibits a selection of fossilized animals and plants from the unique UNESCO World Heritage Site of Monte San Giorgio.

New attractions in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
The new projects of the Museum of fossils in Meride ideally complete a long journey that began with paleontological excavation and the preparation of fossils, continued with the study and creation of 3D models and ended with the virtualization of moving animals and the creation of scenarios driven by algorithms. The result allows you to admire an ancient world: the best example of marine life in the world dating back to the Middle Triassic, a criterion that allowed the inclusion of Monte San Giorgio in the list of World Heritage Sites.
TRIASSIC PARK AND AQUARIUM - Immerse yourself in the Triassic sea of Monte San Giorgio of 240 million years ago and see with your own eyes the animals and the environment of the time. Thanks to the new attractions in Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), developed in cooperation with SUPSI University, in the immersive room TRIASSIC PARK equipped with last generation Oculus viewers and at the AQUARIUM TRIASSICO awaits you a fantasy world disappeared long ago.
