Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 1: Well and "Riaron"

No community survives without water. Therefore, it is not a surprise that the village centre of Sonvico developed around a well and a stream.

This well was mentioned as far back as 1473 in "Li Statuti de Sonvigo per vulgare" (statutes of Sonvico for the people): "fontana apresso la giexa de Sancto Zovano Batista" (fountain next to the church of Saint John the Baptist). This was the main source of water supply until 1894, when a public aqueduct was built with fountains that still exist today. Drinking water was supplied directly into the houses only in 1907-1908, when 35 taps were installed in Sonvico and 11 in Dino. Due to reasons of hygiene, the well was bricked up in the 1940s. From here, it is possible to reach the Riaron. In the past the stream originated in the upper part of the village and flowed through it, partly canalized and partly in the open, down to below the village. It seems strange that the church was built over the stream since this always created humidity problems to the holy place. It is possible that the people did not want to divert the course of the stream because they believed it fed the source of the well. The underground tunnel, now visible, is very impressive and deserves a closer historical survey.
