Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 28: The Church of Saint John the Baptist

The Parish church of Saint John the Baptist, mentioned already in 1375, is a monument of particular value, the result of a slow and long evolution.

Outside, under the porch, we can admire parts of a big fresco representing the "Dance of Death and/or Triumph of Death", which is thought to date back to the first half of the sixteenth century. Towards the west there is the San Rocco ChapeI with paintings dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Above the main door there is a ‘Pietà’ and an image of St John the Baptist, painted in 1577 by G.B Tarilli. It is worth going inside and admiring the frescos of the fifteenth century on the counter facade, (Mary in Majesty with various Saints in Seregnese style). Of particular interest is the recently restored presbytery with a pictorial cycle of the life of Saint John the Baptist, attributed to G. Caresana (1614), finished with notable plaster decorations. The present marble altar, including a small neoclassical temple, dates from 1833 and is based on a design by the architect Ferdinando Albertolli.
