Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 25: The Oratory of S. Martino

The oratory of St. Martino has always been considered one of the oldest Roman churches of our region.

Archaeological exploration carried out during the restoration works of 1986 brought to light archaeological finds and information of exceptional importance. It has been possible to identify the original timber structure of this place of worship as one of the few examples of wood-built churches south of the Alps. The existence of this building is surely associated with the woman buried inside it. Amongst the objects buried with the her, a Roman-Longobard fibula was found. This dates back to between 650 and 700 A.D. Under the altar, it is possible to see through two side openings, an ancient altar made of white marble of particular rarity and quality. Qualified as the oldest altar of today's Ticino, it is also considered a rarity on a European level. The building went through many important changes that can be partly imagined by observing its characteristics, the retouching and the irregularities of the walls. Inside the small apse is decorated with an altarpiece and paintings dating back to the seventeenth century. We find the Madonna with St Martin and St Catherine. At the back, there are fourteenth century fragments, the best preserved of which is a Madonna with child. Proto-romanic remains are also visible.

(The keys can be obtained at the Parish of Sonvico).
