Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 26: The old center of Sonvico

The centre of Sonvico is the most significant evidence of man's millennial presence on our territory.

The buildings, close one to another, and once enclosed by the castle's wall, can be reached by a multitude of narrow alleys. These follow the ground's contours or form steep passages perpendicular to them.

Due to its individuality, the Swiss Confederation considers Sonvico to be of national importance. The stone walls, the houses and the rural buildings, the loggias and the portals, the decorations and the frescos, are all elements that can be discovered and appreciated by walking about the centre's little streets.

As we reach the centre through the main road (Stradòn) we meet the Holy Laurential House. Built in 1636, after the model of the more famous Loreto's Marian Sanctuary it has an interesting facade.

Further down, we find the oratory of Saint Peter, already mentioned in documents of 1375, which was run by the "Confraternita della Buona Morte" (Brotherhood for a Good Death).
