Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 24: R’Alborón

This is considered to be a natural monument. This chestnut is probably the oldest living piece of vegetation on our territory.

It might have been planted after Sonvico was conquered by the Swiss, who convinced the local people to destroy their castle.

With a circumference that exceeds 10 metres, partly hollow but still very much alive, this tree is called by the village elders, R'alboron (the big tree). This tree symbolizes the importance chestnuts had for our people and for the shaping of our rural landscapes. Today, the whole hill of St. Martino is still a huge chestnut wood.
