Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 8: The glade in the wood

We are now in a very different environment from the one in the wood we just visited: the glade.

Unlike the larger glades, which offer the fauna an important environmental transition between forest and open space (forest margins, bushes; cf. stop 15), this glade is very poor in species of vegetation. The vegetation of this glade is typical of a regularly churned up and flooded ground (plants of the humid under-wood). Here tall trees and shrubs are rare. The herbaceous layer contains almost exclusively Bear's garlic. This forms a compact carpet and permeates the air with its typical scent until late June, then comes the time for the Fiddle dock to grow, a large-leafed hybrid. At the glade's edges we find a young population of Field Maple and different poisonous herbaceous plants, such as the Wolfsbane, which blooms in July and is very poisonous, the Solomon's-seal, and the White False Hellebore.

This scarcity of mixed vegetation results in a dearth of animal species because food and structural resources (places of refuge and places for reproduction) are very limited and not sufficient to sustain the settlement of a diversified fauna.
