Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 12: Water and energy

This part of the path goes along the old water duct belonging to the Utility producing electricity for the population of Massagno, which became self-sufficient in the production of energy in 1925.

Development and expansion work on the production and distribution equipment took place regularly. In 1932 the decision was taken to intercept the waters of the Franscinone to bring them, together with the waters of the Cassarate, to the power station of the "Stampa". In 1987, a further decision to restructure this industry was taken. New underground ducts were built to redirect water from the Cassarate and Franscinone to Sonvico. The old abandoned water ducts can now be used as public footpaths.
