Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 17: The Humid area of Canéed

Walking towards the humid area, we see a tall plantation of Copper Beech.

These trees belong to the same species as we saw in the beech-wood. However, these trees went through a natural genetic mutation and their leaves have turned red.

At the edge of rural areas, the marshes eventually turn into a collection of plants that prefer a humid environment rich in nitrates. There is also a presence of tall water-loving herbs, typical of the rural areas. This change is caused by the wide use of agricultural fertiliser. This is just what happened at the pond that existed at this stop.

The topographical description of this area, Canéed, (reed) indicates that in the past reeds grew here. Today, the dominant species of vegetation are the Queen-of-the-meadows and the Wood Club-rush. These two plants indicate the presence of humid nitrate-rich soil. The subsoil of Canéed, composed of river debris, acts as natural filter for the underground water. The filtered water feeds many springs, which are intercepted, inside the enclosed precinct where the reservoir for drinking water for the municipality of Paradiso is located.

Along the road that leaves this stop, we see the Great Horsetail, a typical species of the humid lowlands. It is a herbaceous plant of a very peculiar shape that contains silica. In the past it was used for cleaning gun- barrels and cauldrons. Going back towards Sonvico on the main road, we pass a votive chapel built by Adamo Bassi to honour a vow he made for the healing of his wife in 1911.
