Theme Trails – The Historical Sonvico Nature Trail

Stage 20: Madonna d'Arla

This is an important thoroughfare for reaching the Val Colla and Cimadera (until 1878 part of Sonvico) and carries on towards the Val Cavargna. The road connection dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century.

The chapel, already mentioned in documents of the fifteenth century, was completely restructured in 1918 and inaugurated in 1919. In bad weather it was used as shelter by the passing travelers. The fresco (1519) depicts a Madonna with Child seated on a throne and Saint Anthony the Great bearing a staff with the hermit bell, and Saint Rocco, showing the sores caused by the plague. On the side wall, hangs a votive offering made by Domenico Soldati, who was saved by a fisherman in 1823 when he overturned his boat near Melide with his horse on it.
