The Stations of the Cross of Bidogno

Bidogno

The 14 stone chapels, each uniquely decorated, line a steep, cobbled path that symbolically evokes the ascent to Calvary. The route connects the village to the Oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie (popularly known as the Oratorio della Maestà). This building originated from the expansion of a small chapel dating back from 1608. It had erected by an emigrant, Martino Quirici, as a votive offering after he had narrowly escaped a robbery.

The historic path has undergone two major restoration campaigns. Between 1908 and 1909, the Milanese artist Luigi Faini restored the frescoes of the Passion. A further conservation campaign, begun in 2001, focused on preserving the stone structures of the chapels, the paintings, and the characteristic ornamental cobbled paving.
