Saint Francis and the Stigmata – A Journey Through Art

On the occasion of the Franciscan Jubilee Year, proclaimed to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Fondazione Gianluigi Giudici in Lugano presents “Saint Francis and the Stigmata. A Journey Through Art”, an event curated by art historian Emanuela Rindi.

A journey from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period through images and artworks that reveal how some of the great masters of Italian art interpreted the figure of Saint Francis and, in particular, the moment when he received the stigmata on Mount La Verna.

From the earliest medieval representations to Giotto’s groundbreaking narrative approach, the journey will explore works by Cimabue, Sassetta, Gentile da Fabriano, Fra Angelico and Domenico Ghirlandaio, culminating in Caravaggio’s intense interpretations. Through different periods and artistic languages, the event will trace the evolution of Franciscan iconography and explore the different ways in which art has sought to convey the human and spiritual dimension of the Saint.

At the end of the event, Emanuela Rindi will accompany participants on a guided tour of the collection of the Gianluigi Giudici Gipsoteca, offering an opportunity to discover the sculptor’s artistic research and appreciate his intense and original interpretation of Saint Francis.

EMANUELA RINDI, art historian and independent curator, graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Parma, specialising in contemporary art. She has collaborated with museums and cultural associations and curated numerous exhibitions in Northern Italy and Canton Ticino. Alongside her curatorial work, she is also active in art education and outreach, giving lectures and talks dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of art.
