ArtLords is a group of Afghan artists also known internationally for the socially motivated graffiti they paint on blast walls in the city of Kabul. These walls protect ministries and international organisations from the numerous attacks in the capital. The name ArtLords is a peaceful provocation against the so-called war lords who still control many regions of the country. Founded by three artists, the group has provided work for more than 40 people, enabling many families to survive. The paintings aim to raise awareness among the local population through strong images. The themes addressed are many: from the fight against corruption to violence against women, from child labour to the loss of Afghan traditions. Omaid Sharifi and Kabir Mokamel, two of the founders of the collective, created a large mural in Parco Tassino in Lugano, involving passers-by in the realisation of the work.
