Founded in Milan in 1992, Primo Marella Gallery has played a key role in introducing and exploring contemporary art from outside the Western world. Focusing on China in the late 1990s, the gallery has since broadened its scope to include artists from India, Southeast Asia and Africa.
In 2004, the gallery opened a space in Beijing, within the thriving 798 Art Factory area.
Since 2008, Primo Marella Gallery has increasingly focused on African art. By showcasing artists from different African countries, the gallery helps to bring their unique perspectives to a global audience.
In 2012 (after closing the Chinese gallery) Primo Marella Gallery opened two new exhibition spaces in Lugano, Switzerland.
Through its exhibitions, publications, and collaborations with curators and critics, Primo Marella Gallery continues to promote a richer, more inclusive understanding of contemporary art from different regions, bridging cultural divides and fostering a global dialogue in the art world.
