Gianna lives alone. She leads a quiet, predictable life, filled with small, comforting routines. One day, during her usual walk, she stops – as she always does – to look at the fish in the aquarium displayed in the window of the familiar shop she regularly passes. This time, however, something special happens: Gianna has the feeling that one of the fish is smiling at her. Unable to resist, she decides to buy it and take it home.
Now she has a quiet and discreet companion with whom she can share her days and her routine. Yet, contrary to all expectations, the little fish’s presence will transform her life. It will lead her to reflect on her loneliness, on the limits she has imposed on herself out of fear, and on the possibility of granting – and allowing herself – freedom, and of breathing deeply in the vast, open sea.
The performance is almost entirely wordless. It is built around the evocative power of images and music, favouring a visual and sensory language that is accessible even to very young audiences.
Freely inspired by the picture book “Free as a Fish” by Jimmy Liao.
