LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura
After the success of Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) and Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, the LAC is once again producing an opera, and this time it has chosen Anna Bolena (Anne Boleyn) a lyrical tragedy in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti with libretto by Felice Romani. The direction of the opera has been entrusted to Carmelo Rifici, and it is conducted by Maestro Diego Fasolis, a recent award-winner of the prestigious Doron Prize for his many years of activity as an orchestra and choir conductor.
Considered to be one of the highest peaks of Donizetti's operatic production and of romantic opera in general, Anna Bolena was first staged at the Teatro Carcano in Milan in 1830, achieving an extraordinary success. However, despite its initial triumph, the opera gradually disappeared from the repertoire, until 1957, when, thanks to the memorable interpretation by Maria Callas at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, it began a true second life.
Accused of high treason, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England, was beheaded in 1536. The numerous characters and the dense interweaving of love and power stories take the spectator on a dark and passionate journey through the queen’s dramatic life. In the plot, Anne Boleyn is not described as a martyr or a victim, but rather as the builder of her own destiny, fully aware of her lust for power.
