In the lush heart of Monte Arbòstora

Hiking Trail

A proposal that allows you to reach the south side of this intriguing and varied peninsula passing close to Carona and continue towards the Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Ongero until Morcote.

San Salvatore – Carona

You initially descend from the summit along a path that winds pleasantly through the woods.

The intermediate stage at Ciona has a grotto and there is a postbus stop here, which connects Lugano and Carona. From here, a dirt road through the woods leads to the characteristic Carona, whose centre still retains its charm.

Carona – San Grato Park – Carona

Just a 15 minute walk from Carona there is the possibility to visit the scenic San Grato Park with its many attractions, all in all an extra hour's hike worth doing.

Carona – Madonna d'Ongero – Alpe Vicania – Morcote

Continue towards the Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Ongero, which offers a panoramic view of Collina d'Oro. The trail then plunges back into the lush woods on the western slope of Monte Arbòstora to reach Alpe Vicania, where there is a restaurant located in an idyllic setting (check days/times of opening). Shortly after Alpe Vicania the trail descends to Morcote on a stairway of about 1200 steps. Morcote is a village that in the past has been awarded the prize for the most beautiful village in Switzerland. It has a well-preserved centre, a lakeside promenade to admire and the panoramic and imposing Church of Santa Maria del Sasso to visit.

The Scherrer Park completes the range of parks on this itinerary. In order to admire the region at its best, we recommend returning to Lugano by boat (from April to October).
