Spring Concert of the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano, featuring, among other works, the two pieces we will perform at the Federal Festival in Biel the following week.
The program is as follows:
Pastoral Suite, Op. 61 – Franco Cesarini
Composed of three movements (Idyll, Playful Shepherd Boys, Rain Upon the Fields), the Pastoral Suite draws inspiration from the Arcadian ideal of a simple, harmonious life in harmony with nature. Cesarini translates into music the timeless myth of the locus amoenus, a place of refuge and serenity, suspended between reality and imagination, where man rediscovers a primordial balance far from the complexity of civilization. Through lyrical atmospheres, playful bursts, and descriptive elements, the work constructs a luminous and still soundscape, rich with poetic and symbolic resonances.
Quadrants des rêves, Op. 63 – Franco Cesarini
A symphonic poem in six episodes, Quadrants des rêves is a dreamlike journey through a series of sonic images closely linked to the experience of dreaming. The work opens with Aubade, which evokes the delicate light of dawn and a suspended vision; it continues with L’Éveil du Jeu, where energy and movement take on a playful and dynamic character. At the heart of the composition, Pastorale paints a landscape of bucolic calm, followed by Danse des Quadrants, a rhythmic and choreographic section of great vitality, and Jeux de lumières, in which light takes center stage through ethereal and brilliant sounds. The journey culminates in Apothéose du rêve, a sonic triumph of emotional intensity and color, in which the dream reaches its highest expression. The whole forms a continuous journey of images and inner states, in which the music dissolves the boundaries of time and creates visions that transcend reality.
Symphony No. 2 – James Barnes
Symphony No. 2 is characterized by a solid and abstract conception, based on rigorous thematic construction and a strong rhythmic drive. It was premiered by the University of Kansas Symphonic Band under the direction of Robert E. Foster and received the Neil A. Kjos Memorial Award in 1982 for the most significant contribution to band music. The symphony is divided into three movements: an Elegy in sonata form, Interrupted Variations, and a Finale, also in classical sonata form. The latter culminates in a coda that leads to a concluding explosion of great dramatic force and color: an emblematic example of pure musical energy, characteristic of the modern wind orchestra.
