The trail connecting Carona and Melide winds through a woodland rich in history, natural heritage and traces of the past, offering a unique opportunity to experience a landscape of outstanding scenic, cultural and ecological value.


Along the route, the many functions of the forest are revealed: a place for recreation and wellbeing, a valuable habitat supporting rich biodiversity, and an important source of timber. The path follows an ancient historic route, also known as the “Path of the Dead”, once used by the inhabitants of Melide when travelling to Carona. Among chestnut trees, signs of wildlife, glacial erratic boulders and ancient rock carvings, the trail offers an opportunity to discover the delicate relationship between people, woodland and landscape, highlighting the ecological, historical and social importance of this forest environment.
